For each course, the course plan defines the number of hours per week for each type of classes and corresponding credit units. There are four different types of classes: Tutorial classes/Problem-solving classes, in which theoretical notions introduced in lectures are put to practical use; Laboratory practicals - Classes carried out in laboratories where students conduct experiments and exercices; Seminars.
The various forms of assessment include: exams, short essays, individual and/or group work, projects. Written exams and compulsory: often, various forms of assessment are used together.
Course units are normally taugh in Portuguese (undergraduate and postgraduate courses). Incidentally, when the department receive visiting professors, courses may be taugh in a foreign language (English, French, Spanish).
