The main direction of research of the gEPL, the teaching and R&D group on Language Specification and Processing, is oriented towards the "rigorous specification of languages" and the "systematic development of their processors". Language syntax and semantics is formally defined by a Grammar; we support our work on regular expressions, context free grammars, translation and attribute grammars, schemas for document type definition, etc. Language Processors are systematic and automatically built using tools generically called Compiler Generators that take the grammar and produce the analysers/translators. Aimed, in the old days, at facilitating the development of efficient compilers, nowadays this area has a broader application field ranging from the definition and support of Domain Specific Languages til natural language processing, text mining and automatic translation; visual languages, program visualization/animation and comprehension or document markup, archiving, digital libraries, semantic web (including virtual museums) are also our targets. The activity of this research group is oriented by the so-called "grammatical approach to problem solving".
